Making Free Trade Work in the Americas is the first volume in the series entitled Toward Seamless Borders. The book consists of five sections — each examining aspects of trade, investment and the harmonization of law and procedure between the United St ates and its neighbors through the eyes of U.S., Mexican and European scholars. Special emphasis is given to U.S.-Mexico trade and NAFTA.

This publication tracks advances in private law harmonization among the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Some examples include the Center's Guidelines for the Clearing and Return of Checks and Notification of Dishonor among the three NAFT A countries; the first phase of a Center study on the harmonization of U.S.-Canada-Mexico customs transaction requirements; the first phase of a study of the U.S. and Mexican Warehouse Receipt; Center's border state judicial cooperation project and variou s environmental proposals. Each of these projects offers the prospect of significant changes in the rules governing trade and investment in the Western Hemisphere.
