Salary: $40,000 annual

Fellow may work remotely or in-person office space available as needed.
The International Law Fellow will work closely with NatLaw’s Research Attorneys and Project Managers in a wide variety of legal research and law reform projects. Current projects at NatLaw are in the areas of: secured transactions and financial inclusion (asset-based lending, supply chain finance, factoring, etc.), crypto-assets, alternative dispute resolution, cross-border enforcement of judgements/awards, warehouse receipt financing, among others. The Fellow is expected to work independently and in team environments on research or reform projects, writing draft reports, collecting research data, findings and conducting analysis of such findings, conducting comparative and multi-country legal research, preparing PowerPoints, tables, charts and other relevant outputs. The position is designed to offer Fellows a comprehensive experience working in economic development projects as a research attorney and at a non-profit environment, applying all critical thinking and management skills. The International Law Fellow will, therefore, also support project management activities as needed, and other project-related tasks including social media, administrative and other duties, as assigned.
Fellows typically are recent law school graduates with a strong interest in international law and economic development.
- JD from an ABA-Approved Law School
- Legal research and analytical skills
- Exceptional writing and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of a language other than English – and particularly, Spanish, Chinese, or Arabic
- Experience in project or program management
- Bar-passage is an advantage but not required
NatLaw is a 501(c)(3) non-profit research institution, affiliated with the University of Arizona, College of Law. Founded in 1992, NatLaw creates inclusive economic opportunity through sustainable legal solutions, contributing to grassroots economic development and financial inclusion. We do this through three functions:
(i) We set standards: Experts for various United Nations lawmaking agencies including the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) and the UN Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). NatLaw’s team participated in the drafting of the UNCITRAL Model Law on Secured Transactions (2016), led the preparation of the UNCITRAL Guide on the Implementation of a Security Rights Registry (2013), the OAS Model Registry Regulations (2009), and currently leads the UNIDROIT’s Project on Best Practices in the Field of Electronic Registry Design and Operation (BPER). Content developer for various publications of the World Bank Group guiding the implementation of standards and charting new areas of research – e.g., the effect of technology on commercial law and the impact of COVID-19 on access to credit.
(ii) We implement law reform: Drafted or advised on secured transactions and related areas of law and regulations in over 20 countries in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Advised on the implementation of collateral registries in over 20 countries ensuring that the design corresponds to the governing legal framework and best international practices.
(iii) We build capacity: Developed hands-on practical training for public and private sectors, including on the access to and use of collateral registries.
